Thousands of Americans cross the border every year in order to save a great deal of money buying prescription drugs. This is a major industry, and total sales to foreigners exceeds two hundred million dollars annually.
Many drugs that require a prescription in the U.S. can be bought over the counter in Mexico, such as antibiotics, anti-depresants, birth control pills and heart medications. Technically these drugs do require a presciption but the law is routinely ignored.
Self medication is however of public health concern because of the problem of drug misuse and abuse.
Being French and having free health care (well it's NOT completely free) or easy (controlled) access to medicine is not something I take for granted. I consider myself fortunate to have what I call this "basic humain right".
The fact that many US citizen can become homeless because of illness and can't afford proper medicine really gives me chills...
